Today is the first day of summer. That’s a hell of a thing.

In Los Angeles sometimes it feels like spring is already summer. But it isn’t — the true summer is only beginning.

What does summer mean? I looked into it. The beginning of summer is a weird thing. Seasons are the reason for life on Earth.

The timing of the solstice is not based on a specific calendar date and time. It depends on when the Sun reaches its northernmost point from the equator.

The word solstice is from the Latin solstitium, from sol (sun) and stitium (to stop), reflecting the fact that the Sun appears to stop at this time (and again at the winter solstice).

In temperate regions, we notice that the Sun is higher in the sky throughout the day, and its rays strike Earth at a more direct angle, causing the efficient warming we call summer.

This summer solstice is the day with the most hours of sunlight during the whole year.

So today, if you read this on June 21, 2017, is the day with the most hours of sunlight in the whole year.

Today is literally the “longest day” if you define a day by the amount of sunlight.

Summer is a very physical and scientifically precise thing. It’s the place where, on an arc in the sky, the sun is at its most balanced. It’s the high tipping point on the curve.

Yet psychologically and in our minds, a state which is so oddly unnatural and natural in its own ways, summer is a whole other thing altogether.

It’s not about how high the sun is or the effects of warmth in the planet due to prolonged heating.

Summer is summer sales, end of school years, moments and opportunities for travel and so on.

Personally, I think I’m inherently a winter person. But summer is damn alluring.

It’s hard (and maybe more as you get older) to dislike the feeling of life and greenery and adventures opening up into longer days in the year. The spirit of summer, regardless of specie, is the Godliest event of the year. Earth is filled with life, and it is a beautiful thing.

Summer reminds me that being alive and living life is the biggest reward of all. There is nothing like the experience of, regardless of specie, being alive in a conscious world. Especially in these times for humans — information at our fingertips, constant deliveries and conveniences….

I wish us a great summer of life ahead. Let’s ask that we remember how valuable this is everyday, how grateful we need to feel, how positive we should be.

My wish this summer is that we take nothing for granted. Live every moment, and every moment is a blessing.

Just what to do with those extra minutes of sunlight?

The important thing is that it’s up to you.

  1. Summer means a lot to me, and although I’m inherently a winter kind of guy, too, summer to me also means thinking ahead for more family and close-friend engagements, hikes, bonding and above all, road trips to explore new destinations and enjoy new adventures.

    Great piece!

    1. That all sounds good to me man! Looking forward to any moments we’re able to have together this summer. Also this summer is special, you have something you didn’t before. A little jewel.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and perspective.

      Hear hear! 🍻
